Figure 127.4.8-4 (a) shows a full penetration weld between nozzle (branch) and shell (header) - set on.
Figure 127.4.8-4 (b) shows a second detail - but insert style.

My interpretation has always been that the external fillet weld has to be 3/8" minimum to achieve a minimum 1/4" throat.
In 127.4.8-4 (a) this appears to be correct.

I notice that the second detail has an unequal leg fillet on the exterior, with a minimum t_c throat value dimension running perpendicular to the shell bevel.
It appears to be right angle to the weld bevel.
If so - for a 45° bevel, whatever the thickness, the leg would only need to be 0.31" on the vertical leg if parallel.
Reducing the bevel to 30° would actually REDUCE the required vertical weld leg dimension.

A. Is this correct, and I have been requiring more welding than required for insert details?
B. Is this incorrect?

Bevel doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is the throat of the fillet weld (tc). The throat is either .7 x the branch nom. thickness or 1/4"....whichever is less. Therefore the MAX fillet weld leg required would be 3/8"...not minimum.
