B31.3 Software

Does anyone have suggestions on good software that will run shell, connections, etc.. calculations per the B31.3 rules? I am seriously considering Compress for Vessel calculations per ASME VIII-1 & VIII-2, but also need to consider piping and piping components.

There are a lot of excellent software products available - the good software follows the requirements of various Codes (USA and other Country's requirements are included). GENERALLY speaking you will be able to buy software for structural analyses of piping and you will be able to buy software for structural analyses of pressure vessels. Some software companies offer both (piping and vessel) types of software.

Some vessel software follows the requirements of the ASME B&PV Code, Section VIII, Division 1 (design by rule). Most piping software follows the requirements of the ASME B31 Codes for Pressure Piping and they use beam theory for the analysis solution (you will sometimes have to supplement this with finite element analysis (FEA) of individual local component stresses).

However I will refrain from listing ALL the providers of piping and vessel software because everybody has their favorite product. You will have to do some "homework" and look at all the products available and decide which are the best fit for your needs and budget.

If you are talking about wall thickness calcs and branch reinforcement calcs then why not develop a spreadsheet to follow the particular Code rules. This will only take you a short time to do and you will also become more familiar with the Codal requirements.
