Do they work!

I have just crashed, well my assy model has and I have lost a few hours!

I thought my autosave should have created backups, but no.

Under tools/options/backups/

The save auto recover info every 1 changes - box ticked

And a location for back up copies is set to my local machine.

But there is nothing there! My MDT doesn't have this problem as u can get it to autosave every x minutes, but this just does seam to work.

Instead of 1 make it at least 2. Before SW05 backups used to use Rebuilds. They have switched that to actual changes. So try switching it to 2 (At least), make sure the "Save auto Recovery info every "X" changes" is checked. Alo have a direct path given in the box provided e.g. - C:\SW Backups - If you don't have a path there then your backups are located under C:\Documents and settings\{Log in name}\Local settings\TEMP

Also, try a search for the file name to see if you saved somewhere else by mistake.

Backups and autosave are not the same thing!

Backups are a copy of the previous save each time you create a new save (similar to ACAD's .bak files). These go into the folder specified under tools/options/backups/.

Autosaves happen every x changes (set in tools/options/backups/). These files should be saved in:
C:\Documents and Settings\(login name)\Local Settings\Temp\swxauto
This is a hidden area by default, so you may need to go to Folder Options/View and check Show hidden files or folders.

Auto Backup can be saved in the path at which you give it in the space provided in the path you list - tools\options\system options\backups - The files in the other path you listed - C:\Documents and Settings\(login name)\Local Settings\Temp\swxauto - Are Temp files. Those temp files are created upon opening any file or application. They are crap files and should be removed as often as possible.

If your not using a path in the tools\options\system options\backups then the autobackup will place those files in C:\Documents and Settings\(login name)\Local Settings\TempSWBackupDirectory - file folder.

Backups is something you have to do manaully if you want a copy somewhere. Unless you have the auto backup copy in your directory.

There is a basic rule for every software user, no matter which software you use: save your work in a regular basis and always before and after making important changes (normaly it's useful to make the "before" or "after" saves in a different name, so you can always easely roll back).

No matter if you have backups, autosaves, ..., doing that you are shure that your job is secure and you will profit from having a well known starting point, in case of problems.

An autosave for each 1 change is not an option, because it can slows down a lot your work.

I just tested and what you stated is new to 2005! (we have not migrated yet)

In 2004 and prior, that setting only controlled the backups and I could not get the autosaves to go somewhere that was not hidden to the users.

Now with '05, the swxauto directory is placed as a sub in the backup directory.

This has burnt me so many times! I hate to say it, but the only way to ensure you dont lose lots of work is to get in the habit of saving in regular intervals.

this has carry over benefits when using other software too.

I have stopped trusting auto-saving
