Balcony supported by steel in cold area

This is a question from a friend of mine. Doubting I gave him complete answer, I post here for your advice.

Question: What's is the structual or architectural impact if the balcony support beams are steel and in cold areas, while the structure where the beams come from are insulated and heated?

assuming by cod areas you mean areas like new england or montana and not the artic. i would think there be no structura imact. teh steel would just suck heat out of the building envelope like a heat sink
