I am working on a design for a ball-and-socket snap-fit and I am wondering if anyone can explain what the lead/assembly angle is? The ball part of the snap fit will be attached to a horizontal surface and is inserted perpendicular to the socket surface (both are horizontal). Does that mean my lead angle is 0? If not, how do I find it?

if you post a cross section as shown in the document discussing lead angle I suspect all will become clear. I suspect it is to do with the chamfer on the internal edge of the bore in the socket, vs the angle of the ball at that diameter.

Cheers
