Ball Point Rod?

A friend who has some wacky but sometimes practical ideas, has asked me if I know how to find an axially load bearing rod with a ball at the end to enable it to ride smoothly over a surface. This would essentially be like a ball point pen, but obviously bigger and stronger. I have seen similar things as probes in measuring and contour following equipment, but I have no idea what they are called or how to find them. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
