Hello

I’m interested in ballistic steel and want to know more about it!
I have heard about the phenomenon called the body work effect (ss-109 penetrate an outer skin before it hits the ballistic steel) and reed a little on the Internet about it. Does anybody know something about it?

And I also what to know who manufacturer ballistic steel? Technical data? Thickness? Have searched on the Internet but it was hard to find how really manufactured the steel and what kind they offered.

I have understand that is complex, but I'm must interested in armour cars. What kind of steel do the use and who is manufacture the steel. But it's a top secret branch!
 
Perhaps someone from Bofors will be able to guide you regarding armoured cars.

Rolled homogeneous armor was new keyword for me=) Allegheny Ludlum makes aluminium, that no so interesting for me. The Mittalsteel is more interesting!
I have found some information about SSAB's Armox and Protect, Thyssen Krupp's Secure, Ruuki's Ramor and some more. I’m searching for technical data so I can compare them to each other. Thickness, Hardness, yield-, tensile- strength and tolerance.

It’s harder to find anything about the phenomenon about the outer skin before the armour plate when you shoot with SS109 5.56 x 45 (M855).

Are you talking about military armored vehicles or commercial?

For commercial vehicles, you would assume that any external body material is not there for the purpose of determining ballistic protection.

Allegheny Ludlum is not a supplier of aluminium products-- they supply iron-, nickel-, and titanium-based products. The link that I included previously takes you to the armor plate information on their website.
 
Commercial.
I know that external body material not is for ballistic protection. But I know that ss109 doesent penetreat 6mm thick ballistic steel, the rumour says if you put an 0.8mm thick body plate before the ballistic steel it’s going to pentreat both.

hmm... perhaps I don't know enough about impact mechanics, but I'm pretty skeptical that adding a thin layer outside makes armor more penetrable. Why not add the same thin layer to your penetrator if that was the case?

Why are you so interested?
 
SS109 is a relatively standard ball ammo:
Adding body panels in the way is not going to improve its performance. If anything, the extra layer should add to the protection, albeit, infinitesimally.

I have sold many armored vehicles domestic and worldwide, and simple inquiries by one individual are not alarming. For the price of an armored car, the buyer can receive a very good briefing on the technology.

An inside story. I was at the NY auto show several years ago showing an armored car, and one morning a number of jolly friendly ladies came to visit with many questions. We had an armored Cadillac with all the popular features. They were impressed with the sound deadening of the armored car with the door closed.

That afternoon a character jumped the rope barrier, and examined the car minutely. I called to him 'Sir, sir, ...' and he gave me this withering look. I said 'look all you want.' He was probably a mob driver looking over the car for the boss. I made the connection after recalling the questions from the ladies. They wanted to know if there was any restriction on who we sold to.

The car finally was sold to an eccentric old millionaire from Chicago. He was stopped by Calif Hwy Patrol cruising at high speed with the siren and flashing lights. He was escorted to the border and asked to not come back.
