Ballpark Calculation on shear strength from tensile strength

Hi All,

I am looking to find a "ballpark" calculation of converting tensile strength on heat treated material into a shear strength measurement. I would then test the forumla when I get the parts back.

Specifically I am looking at 1/4 diameter Pin 416 SS heat treated to Rc40. I would be perfoming a double shear test where I will put the part into a test fixture where the middle section will be pressed until breakage occurs on the both outer sections.

The ballpark conversion is ultimate shear strength ~ 0.6*UTS.
 
Are you trying to determine the shear stress or use it as a shear pin? If you want it to shear you need to groove it. At this higher strength I would suspect that shear will not exceed 60% of UTS.

I'm trying to determine what the double shear value is for this diameter 416 ss with a RC 40 heat treat. The part will be used as a shear pin.

If you groove the pin you will get much more repeatable shear values. You can control both the exact size and the shape of the initiation by using a groove. You can even adjust the depth slightly for different strength levels.

Quick note: for non-circular sections you should use 0.5*UTS for safety. Agree with the 0.6 comments above for this case.
