I have a client that wants to hang a banner from the side of an existing building. The banner is supported at the top and bottom and is 4’ wide x 20’ tall. The code to be used is ASCE7-05. My question is which wind load section on ASCE 7-05 does this fall under? I am guessing section 6.5.15 as the sign is not freestanding.

I don't see this a sign - a rectangular vertical plate sticking out of or above the ground. I would look at C&C wall loads.

ASCE 7-10 has a section (29.4.2) on solid attached signs that reverts to C&C loads with the internal pressure coefficient set to 0. Is your sign on or close to the building wall?

JAE,

WOW posting at 12:00 am that's dedication.

Yes, these will be close to the building, about 4' away to the outer edge max. I didn't get a chance to look at ASCE7-10 to see if there was any clarification. I'm surprised they use C&C loading with the internal pressure set to 0 as I think that would give you lower wind loads.

Second the above comment, this should use the C&C load for the building in my mind. Probably a lot of engineering judgement involved in using even those loads for this application, though. I imagine that unless this is pulled really tight, any "flapping" of the banner can cause some pretty extreme loads in the banner and its anchorage.

SteelPE - I believe that section only applies to signs 3' or less away from the building face...so the lower loads somewhat make sense.
