Bar Grating Stair Treads

Hello,

I am designing an exterior steel stair and was looking to implement bar grating treads with end carrier plates containing holes for 3/8" bolts. I know I am dealing with very little load, but I am wondering if others have specified a 3/8" hot-dipped galvanized bolt in the past? What grade bolt did you use?

Also, has anybody forgone using these stair treads and instead gone with typical bar grating with a nosing, all bearing on a ledger angle attached to the stringers?

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, I've had several fabricators over the years that just fab their own treads out of grating bearing on ledger angles welded to the stringers, especially when odd stair widths are specified. As far as small bolts, the A307 spec goes down to 1/4"Ø and is often fine for small loads.
