We are having corrosion problems using fatty acids in high pressure barrel and plunger pumps, normal material is tool steel we have tried ceramic coating this is partly successfull but we are experiencing cracking down the barrel possibly due to hardening temps, another material we intend to try is a tool steel with 12 % chrome, our main trouble with materials is finding one that has the non galling prop of tool steel, with corrosion resitance of 316.

Some of the high nitrogen, high manganese stainlesses have better galling resistance. Carpenter Technology has a galling resistant stainless they call "Galltough". See their website.

I think you can use a heat treatable stainless steel, with electroless nickel plating on either the plunger or barrel to prevent galling.
