BASIC METALLURGY TO KNOW 1

Am working in Pipeline Industries with Mechanical Engineering Background. So i need here little Metallurgy here i would like to know basics of Steels can any one Provide advise on this matter. If any one have the Basic book please provide an copy it is very useful to me.

The American Society for Metals (ASM International) has an excellent series of handbooks that will teach you a lot about metals and metallurgy. They are available in hard copy or by subscription online.

That's a lot of handbooks... Which volumes would you recommend as essential reading for a structural engineer? Or for a structural engineer involved in forensic work?

Volume 9, Metallography and Microstructures
Volume 10, Materials Characterization
Volume 11, Failure Analysis and Prevention
Volume 13A, Corrosion: Fundamentals, Testing, and Protection
Volume 17, Nondestructive Evaluation and Quality Control

I would love to have the whole series of handbooks; however, that is certainly cost prohibitive. I have a few and am considering a subscription for the online. I don't really like subscriptions for reference material, but that seems to be the norm!

I Have the Book Volume 1, Properties and Selection: Irons, Steels, and High-Performance Alloys it was to deep in my point. I would like to ask one more question am having problem understanding the structure and crystal structure iron carbon diagram very basics Etc., Can any one suggest easy understandable book to know the very basics of steels it may helpful to me.

ASM mentioned above also has excellent courses to offer at their headquarters. Reading on your own does not necessarily equate to being self taught. Self taught metallurgy is an art.

Creeraam, I'd recommend reading Chapter 2 of "Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist, Second Edition" to gain a better understanding of the basics.

Can't believe nobody has recommended Callister - Intro to Materials Science!

If you're working in pipelines you may also want to be familiar with pipe forming processes (seam and seamless) and welding (usually SAW welding for seam pipes).

Jack....Calister's book is "Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering" (among other similar books of his)
