The American Society for Metals (ASM International) has an excellent series of handbooks that will teach you a lot about metals and metallurgy. They are available in hard copy or by subscription online.

That's a lot of handbooks... Which volumes would you recommend as essential reading for a structural engineer? Or for a structural engineer involved in forensic work?

BowlingDanish...
I suggest the following; however, to buy them all in hardcopy, you're looking at around $2000 USD:
Volume 1, Properties and Selection: Irons, Steels, and High-Performance Alloys
Volume 6A, Welding Fundamentals and Processes
Volume 8, Mechanical Testing and Evaluation
Volume 9, Metallography and Microstructures
Volume 10, Materials Characterization
Volume 11, Failure Analysis and Prevention
Volume 13A, Corrosion: Fundamentals, Testing, and Protection
Volume 17, Nondestructive Evaluation and Quality Control

I would love to have the whole series of handbooks; however, that is certainly cost prohibitive. I have a few and am considering a subscription for the online. I don't really like subscriptions for reference material, but that seems to be the norm!

"Making Shaping and Treating of Steel" you can find at Amazon.
"Metallurgy for the Non Metallurgist"

Ron
Volume 1 of the Handbook
Blodgett's "Design of Welded Structures"
Volume 11 "Failure Analysis" of the Handbook

weldstan...agree. I have those.

Hai Experts,

THANKING YOU ALL FOR THE VALUABLE REPLY.

weldstan....I can relate to that![lol]

ASM mentioned above also has excellent courses to offer at their headquarters. Reading on your own does not necessarily equate to being self taught. Self taught metallurgy is an art.

Creeraam, I'd recommend reading Chapter 2 of "Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist, Second Edition" to gain a better understanding of the basics.

Can't believe nobody has recommended Callister - Intro to Materials Science!

If you're working in pipelines you may also want to be familiar with pipe forming processes (seam and seamless) and welding (usually SAW welding for seam pipes).

Jack....Calister's book is "Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering" (among other similar books of his)
