I am a structural engineer and new in the area of vibrations. Can anyone suggest a good book for vibrations testing?. I need the basics on how to select accel positions, how to read the test data and how to refine the fem model so that it reflects the actual structure.

thanks

Harris and Beranek are excellent, but they WON'T tell you where to put the accelerometers.

mzl's questions are very good, but are also very hard to answer. Accelerometers are usuallly placed in a fairly arbitrary fashion, towards the outer spatial limit of each component or sub-component.

The test data should be reduced to a set of mode shapes, frequencies, and damping values. This will allow direct comparison wih your FEA results (apart from the damping)

Modifying your FE model for good correlation: (1) DISCARD ALL RIGID ELEMENTS.

(2) do your statics work?

(3) are your masses OK?

Cheers
