Battery Contact Corrosion 1

I am having problems with AA batteries and the contacts to the battery terminal in a battery pack. The battery pack will hold 6 batteries. It appears that a green patina forms on the contacts in the holder. It does not look like the batteries are leaking. Is this a unique phenomena or should I be concerned. I have several thousand instruments with this battery pack installed.

It is not unusual for the positive post of a battery to oxidize. Look at your automotive battery and you will see an example of this "black post" problem. However, there are many 9-volt battery system in use and I haven't heard of them having trouble. Of course, those systems do not use a copper connector. You might want to switch to a cupro-nickel or stainless steel.

A trick I've used is to coat the system with sodium silicate, "egg saver" we farm kids use to call it, to inhibit the corrosion.
