Hi Everyone,

Is there a minimum recommended distance that a splice should be staggered away from a developing bar in a beam so that they don't interact with each other. The development length is based off the center to center distance between developing bars, so maximizing this number is ideal to minimize development length. See below illustration.

Thanks

r13 - that is a pretty good link for this question. Is this study from your personal library? Do you know if there has been an update or revision? Have you used the spacing from this article in projects with buy-in and acceptance? I ask because I'm looking to add to and update my library of engineer vetted / juristictional approved design/construction standards rather than depending on Google or Bing, and based on your regular contributions I think you are a good source.

IFRs,

To your dismay, I got this paper from goggling, noticed the publisher, and find the content in-line with our practice - no overlap in between adjacent splices when the approach (stagger) is employed. A note of "zero inch" will be indicated on the construction drawing to avoid mistakes. BTW, CRSI is definitely a good source on reinforced concrete detailing. .

That's a fine document and I'll certainly be glad to add it to my library.

I believe that the document that you've referenced actually says the exact opposite of that. The zero gap produces the worst case crack condition shown in the first diagram below which is worse that both the positive and negative gap conditions.

KootK,

Good catch, and agreed. Our thought was only focused on the "congestion alleviation" and overlooked other issues.
