Beam splice

I want to splice a PTDF1 to a DF1 floor joist for a balcony addition with no support at the lower level ( cantiliver balcony),I am thinking of calculating the max. moment at the face of the wall and find equvalent axial load at the splice end and do the splice design based on the moment and shear of the equivalent load on the splice side, any comments be appreciated.

This may be a very obvious question to you but what are PTDF1 and DF1?

Thanks, PTDF1 mean Pressure Treated Douglas Fir-larch No.1, DF1 mean Douglas Fir-Larch No.1, I was thinking that to analysis just like steel bolt connection.

ahhhh. i was totaly clueless as well about ptdf1 and df1!!

are you sure it is pt doug fir. most pt i see is southern pine.

why don't you just lap the two joist. stp the no pt stuff at the exterior wall and if you lap the joist for a length equivalent to three times the cant you should be fine

I would suggest that you try to avoid any moment connect through a wood connection. You would be better off running you deck joist back into the main span as described above by tfl.
