hi everyone.
When somebody says a beam is spanning in direction lx of the slab, what does he exactly mean? That a beam is parallel to lx length or ly length? Note: lx is shorter distance while ly is longer one.

Thanks in advance.

Thanx hokie66, your anser wil be more usefull if you tell be wether its parallel to lx or ly. English is not my mothe tongue, please help. I think you are still online.

Let me put it another way. If your slab is 5 metres x 10 metres, with lx=5 and ly=10, a beam spanning in the lx direction is 5 metres long.

ok thanks once again hokie66. According to your answer the beam is parrallel lo lx. Thanks once again!
Anybody with different idea.
