Bearing capacity calculation in Forte 2

Hi everyone,

I was using Forte to size my beams and there is one question:

The beam is 5 1/4" x 11 7/8" PSL beam, the factored reaction force in one support is about 60 kN (13,500 lbf). I am using 3.5" bearing length and the program is showing that the beam will fail in bearing ( the bearing capacity is only 37 kN or 8,400 lbf, see attached screen shot). However as per the TureJoist Guide (see also attached), the 3.5" bearing length for 2.2E PSL beam can take reaction force upto 16,000 lbf.

I am wondering why there is a big difference between the number from the program and the guide book. Did anyone encountered the same problem?

Appreciate your input.

Thanks,

Eric

What do you have the bearing material and type set as? Does that match the intended conditions? It checks both the beam, and the plate.

agree with Jarrod.
seems like your bearing on spf top plates.

increase bearing or add a stl bearing plate or use end bearing for your posts.
