Bearing Temperature 2

Hello All,

What is the maximum temperature a gas generator bearing can withstand. I believe that the gas generator bearing is for a Rolls-Royce Avon engine for industrial engine.

We only monitor this bearing. We do not know the make of it. I guess the bearing type is " Hydrodynamic Bearing with tilting pad"

Babbited, tilting pad bearings for steam turbine alarm at 220F. start plastic melt around 300F

For tilting pad segmented shoe, or elliptical friction type bearings typically alarm at 265 degrees F. This is where the Siemens, Westinghouse, and GE engines I have been privileged to work on currently alarm. This alarm is for High Bearing Metal Temperature and is not used to trip the engine offline. I have seen others at times in different environments alarm at 245 degrees F, however these were in hot ambient enviroments such as UAE, Saudi Arabia, etc.

The problem I am facing is for some of the Avon Engines I see that the bearing temperature is 285.3 Deg C.
I have told the site engineer that there is a scalling issue with the bearing and they are not ready to acknowledge it.

I do not know how to tell them that a bearing cannot withstand 300 Deg C.

my experance is with steam (not combustion) turbine.

But 285C is very close to the pour temperture for the babbet we use.

Is it possible the sensor (possible TC) is reading the casing and not the bearing metal?

The Avon is an aeroderivative gas turbine fitted with rolling element bearings thoughout: front, centre and rear (+ wheelcase/accessory).

When you say that some of the Avon Engines I see that the bearing temperature is 285.3 Deg C , you are implying that you are seeing this on more than one engine - what are the odds that they are all in some sort of dsitress? Maybe this is just the way that they are?

Where exactly are you getting the bearing temperature from? Are these bearing indications really from the engine or from a driven unit? We operate Avons and none are fitted with bearing temperature indications - we do use lube oil pressures and temperatures as engine monitoring indicators and the engine will trip if lube temperatures/pressure go outside preset limits.

Things do get hot inside the Avon: ours are set to alarm on EGT of 720 deg C and trip at 760 deg C - the cooling air outlet temperatures (which show how things are inside the engine) can go above 340 deg C without concern
