Hi everyone,

Quick question - what is the allowable bending stress in steel from S16 (Canadian steel code)? For example, I’m using the bending formula (stress = moment*centroid/MOI). For a steel I beam, is the max bending stress the yield strength or is it a fraction of that? I’ve seen other codes say 0.66*fy but I can’t seem to find anything in S16.

Thanks!

CSA S16 is strictly limit states - you won't find an allowable stress, instead there will be resistance factors. Check the beginning of clause 13.

Make sure you're comparing the factored resistance to the factored load. Sounds like you're trying to do this with unfactored loads and allowable stress.
