Hi,

I am looking for an aluminum grade that is suitable for children dirt bike handle bars. I was looking at 6061 - T6 initially but the cost of annealing prior to bending and then heat treating again makes the project unfeasible. Ideally I am looking for aluminum grade that does not have to be annealed and heat treated. Simply bent and ready for use. The aluminum must still be able to handle the stress and load from riding the motorcycle. The motor cycles are ridden by children aged 4-10 years (beginner riders) so the handle bars do not experience large amount of stress or loads such as adult dirt bikes. Any suggestions?

The cost to heat treat is probably less than the potential liability because the handle bars failed due to insufficient mechanical properties. Have you considered making them out of steel?

1026 carbon steel, strong, easy to form, high fatigue resistance (no Al has this), and good damage tolerance.
Al bars don't end up 33% of the weight because they must be larger diameter and thicker, so they end up m ore like 60% of the weight of steel.
With steel you don't need to have variations in OD, they make them straight 7/8".
I have seen them braced with a formed strip (sort of an angle) and not a tube. Easy and costs less.

Can you just buy a set of handlebars?

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?
