Hi,

I've been working with structures with Abaqus for 5 years, now I'm starting to do a research about wind generators blades and I need to work hard with fluid-structure interaction problems.

As far as I know, the CFD codes usually work together with a structural solver to solve the coupled problem (Ansys-Fluent, for example).

I have some good experience with Abaqus, Nastran and Ls Dyna.

Does anyone has a recommendation about what CFD package is the best for dealing with fluid-structure interactions?

Thanks very much.

Martin

A fairly new product is the COMSOL solver line. This is a multi-physics solver that contains FEA and CFD in the same code package (along with a lot of other stuff), and is made for the type of combined-effects or coupled modelling you want to do. No issues with formatting outputs, no worries about matching time steps - the package is supposed to solve both sets of equations simultaneously.

I've only looked at brochures and their online demos, but it looks slick. I'd definitely check into it. If you do check into it, please post back here on what you've found out.

I remembeeeeer !!!... I have the Demos of COMSOL at home... always looked at it as something for researchers more than a software for working with real world models.

I've looked at it, seems it has a great potential. But it don't seem to manage big models.

I'll look at it better and then I'll post again...

May be explicit coupled fluid-structure is a possibility?

Thanks ver much btrueblood.

The demo versions are node-limited IIRC, the full ver$ion is limited only by your hard disk storage space, and available time, again IIRC.

Yes, explicit fluid-structure coupling is embedded in the CFD simulation package.
