I don't do enough resisidential / commerical work to recommend in those areas

Theres probably hundreds unless you want to be more specific - design of what? transmission lines, substations, power plants, steam turbines, hydro plants, relays, radios

IEEE Red Book is a good starting point. They also have the Gold Book on reliability..

API RP 540. That's American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practice 540 regarding electrical installations in petroleum facilities.

You could also try MIL-HDBK-1022A. That's Military Handbook 1022A (it has been replaced with a UFC--Unified Facilities Criteria--document, but I don't know which one). 1022A is design guidance for military petroleum facilities, and relies on standard industry practice.

If you are looking for petrochem then PIP is definitely what you’re looking for. It is a set of consensus standards of almost every major US petrochem and refining operator. Virtually every API member is also a PIP member.

API 540 and IEEE 141 (Red book) are more general in scope, but fine references.

I should note, if your company is one of the memebers, the standards are available for free. You will need to find out who you company contact is and they can give access to them.
