Best practices for PMI in Manufacturing 1

Does anyone have any good info or links on using PMI in a manufacturing environment? Lessons learned. Best practices. Etc.

I am interested in efficient methods of annotating data, adding specifications and GDT in actual use by mfg.

Maybe there's something on the internets, Twitters n such? ;-)

I remember a few years ago (maybe 8 now) in Orlando, GM and maybe John Baker gave a demo on PMI at the Disney conference. It was pretty impressive. Would like to know if anyone has some good lessons learned like that that can be shared.

Are you referring to using PMI in the cam files as a machining supplement or in the original models design file?

From the one aerospace company's projects I've worked on:

The PMI data includes just about every detail that a "paper" version would. Unless otherwise noted, the model is the nominal standard (no disassociated features to confuse things). If a feature is modeled to the high or low tolerance, then a note in PMI shows that. They still include an external parts list or process document.

On the manufacturing side, the programmers always use the master model concept so all the designer's PMI data is kept only with the design model. In addition, the programmers can then all additional info in PMI regarding special tooling or cutting methods in the cam file. Also important to use the master model concept since PMI data becomes controlled data. Keep the design models in read only folders or use a PDM system. All I can think of off the top of my head.

Would anyone like to share a Model that has PMI. A sample part or what not. I have read the standard on this but examples of how it is actually being used in the industry would be nice to look at and review.

Hi,

The PMI data works with FME and MKE editor.
PMI data works for draftings too, I think.

I know, putting surface finishing, but some geometrical tolerances are dificult to insert in the 3D model.
