I have searched this site and others and talked to many engineers, but want more info.

What is the best way to learn bridge engineering? (Steel LRFD)

I am assuming you are possibly looking at preparation for the PE Exam. I found that Barker/Puckett "Design of Highway Bridges, An LRFD Approach" to be an excellent breakdown of the AASHTO code. While it won't expand into many complex applications or timber/prestressed very well, it does cover conrete and steel in a very clear manner.

The only reason it might be lacking for industry use is this lack of information on Timber, PreStressed or complex bridge problems. For a basic understanding it is very adequate.

(I found mine on Amazon...best $100 I spent on the PE).

Before you read any book, watch "Bridge Over the River Kwai" with Sir Alek Guiness.

Gives you a feel for some of the frustrations encountered, just some.

build bridges that don't fall down ...
or look at how others have built bridges that don't fall down.

or work for an engineering company that builds bridges (that don't fall down)

also look at bridges that fell down (but don't copy them)

yeah, i know, everyone's a smarta$$

Speaking of smart a$$es, recently heard funny quote, completely unrelated to any of the above posters:

If you look around the room, and you can't spot the a-hole, then it's probably you.
