Any 3D part format (even dumb ones) can be measured.

If you have SW2011 you could use the defeature option to minimize the level of detail, but leave the interface and overall size shape of the part. After that, almost any dumb format could be used, depending on what IV-LT can open.

This is for a customer and I do not trust him. I think he would rather make his own parts.

Send him a quote or invoice for the part design and include the option to make the part.

It sounds like you are worried about getting ripped off for your design work. You need to get some agreements established or somebody is going to be severely disappointed.

There are two line items on the quote.

One an NRE (Non-Recurring Engineering) charge for your design work.

The second line item is the quote to manufacture the parts.

Then you at least get your design time covered if he chooses to go elsewhere to have the parts manufactured.

Couldn't it be sent as an E-drawing file with the ability to measure turned off? or has SW discontinued that?

First of all, there is no such product, so find out what product the customer is using.

Any model can be measured in any program that I am aware of.
Autodesk Inventor (and AutoCAD 2012) will read SWx directly or use neutral format like STEP.

If a feature tree is desired in Inventor - simply run Feature Recognition.

Does the Inventor user know how to use Inventor?

I believe that product is the lite version of Inventor they released a few years ago, it includes part and drawing modes but no assembly capabilities.

I am familiar with Inventor LT and AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD Inventor LT (was sold as a suite).
