Gerotor oil pumps are basically unidirectional. if the rotating direction changes, the input and output port needs to be replaced.

a few manufacturers claim that their oil pumps are bi directional (reversible) and if the start up rotating direction is not correct, the lubrication system remains active and pressurized.

Do you have any idea about the origin of this claim?

If the gerotor pumps are used in an special piping with specific check valves, the reversible advantageous is feasible but the oil pump manufacturers said that they did not change and external dimensions.

For example, the Sundyne upgrade kit for 31XN tells the users that the new bi-directional lube pump can be used as the replacement of old pumps without any needed changes.

Yeah, the bidirectional pumps work by allowing the outer ring to rotate freely within the housing through part of a turn, and stopping the rotation with a pin or other positive stop so the ports line up properly at the extremes of travel.

I.e., all the trickery is within the housing; no external plumbing funny business is required.
