It gets the clutter out of the way, and makes for more secure parking. I know there are times I don't like leaving my bike unlocked, even it I can still see it while I'm inside. I like it, but would really love to see a catastrophic failure.

The problem with chaining it to a lamp post is that drunken yobs think it's fun to stamp on your wheels on their way home from the pub. And, of course, the rain makes them rust.
Well in Japan they have beer in vending machines on railway stations. The effective method of stopping teenagers from purchasing from such machines is simply, they are not aloud to. A somewhat different mindset to the rest of the developed world. I am sure it also works re stealing bicycles.
Here, we make sure it's a stout steel cable or hardened chain, a very tall pole or one with an obstacle on top or a loop and to be sure to loop it through the main frame and both wheels and of course not near pubs late at night.
