Hello, again.

I have what most probably consider to be an easy question, but for some reason, I'm just not getting it. Could someone walk me through setting up a template for all my parts and drawings to show the following on every bill of materials : The surface area of the part, and the surface area divided by two, both in different columns. It doesn't sound like it would be difficult, but I"m doing something wrong.

Create a Custom Property in each part, that is tied (linked)to the "Mass Property - Surface area tag. For the surface / 2 problem, I would do that in Excel itself.

In the BOM template, create a new column (left of the $$END one) that has the "line 1" cell NAME equal to the custom property name you made in each part. In the next column to the right, place an equation that is "=H2/2", with H2 being the SUrface area from the part.

Got it?

to go a bit further...

create the custom property in solidworks...
"FILE/PROPERTIES"
click on the "CUSTOM" tab

in the "NAME" box type a name like SURFAREA
click down in the "VALUE" box to highlight it, then click on "MASS PROPERTIES"

SELECT "SURFACE AREA" from the drop down menu.

click "ADD"

now go into excel and open one of the BOM templates located under C:\program files/solidworks/lang/english/
save it as another filename.

then modify it..

first DO NOT modify the first three columns.

create a new column... and give it a label like "SURFACE AREA"

Click on the cell that you just created to highlight it and click INSERT/NAME/DEFINE and type in the custom property name the you created in Solidworks (EXACTLY)!

save the new bom template

next time you create a bom use this new bom template.

that should be all you need there!

hope that helps
