Bind an Image into a DWG

Is there any way to bind a raster image into a drawing similar to binding a *.dwg XREF? I don't want to have to keep the *.gp4 and *.tif files along with the *.dwg file. Bind isn't a selectable option when you right-click on the raster image reference. It is if the XREF is a *.dwg file.

The only way to make an image part of the drawing is to insert it as an OLE object.

The main problem with an image as part of the drawing is the increased size of the drawing.
