Forgive my intrusion, I am an Elec. Eng., but my 16YO daughter is looking for a degree program for Bioengineering. She is interested in Biomechanics, but has been told by two admissions counselors that she must first get a BSME, then go back for a BSBE (is that the correct acronym?). I find that difficult to beleive, and was hoping some of you could suggest some US university programs that offer both concurrently, or one program that includes both disciplines. Yes, I know I can google it, but that doesn't get you past the sales hype. I am looking for recommendations from engineers in the field.

Thanks

Hello,

I am a manufacturer of spinal and orthopedic implants. I also study for my BSBME part time. Unfortunately the program I am in is geared more toward the electrical/imaging side, but it's my only option. I too am interested in the biomechanics track.

Most of the implant designers I have run across did in fact start with a BSME and then followed that with an MS in Biomed. I think this is due in part to the fact that the Biomed degree is relatively a new thing. Because it is relatively new, make sure you look into whether of not the particular program is acredited by ABET. You'll be surprised who is not yet acredited.

If you look around, you should be able to find a BS program that has a good emphasis on Biomechanics. Either way, tell your daughter that she is making the right choice. As a manufacturer in the industry, I can tell you that things are booming and as the population ages things should only get better.

Additionally, you'll find that there is a large number of women choosing that career. I've deal with many female engineers who hold high positions in some very large medical companies. For this reason, there is a lot of opportunity for the female engineer in that field.

Hope this helped - good luck.

Thanks to both of you. Excellent information.
