Good Afternoon,

On a biogas pipeline where the biogas is saturated, is it acceptable to place the SIL rated slam shut valve before a condensate knock-out pot? Can the corrosive nature of the condensate cause the valve to malfunction?
CH4 = 60%, CO2 = 37%, H2S = 400 ppm

Pressure in pipeline is between 20 and 25 mbarg, Temperature between 10 and 20 deg C.

All pipelines laid with gradient to prevent hold up of condensate.

Regards
John

Not if you specify your valve materials to handle the process fluid.

Can it corrode it - yes, but is material and fluid dependant.

Yes, the valves exist and will function. Probably either an all 316 SS or a lined valve.

If this is a SIL 1 or 2 rated trip valve, you still have to provide for emergency relief in the case of any malfunction of the entire trip loop. This is also applicable in most cases for a SIL 3 trip loop. Only in the case of a HIPS valve would you not have to provide for any major relief, but in most cases, provisions are still made for minor leaks across the trip valves (due to trim leakage).
