I am new to using AutoCAD and was only using it to modify a DXF which had different notes on different layers to be created and modified. Easy enough.

After several hours of work, there are a lot of notes, the layers started acting funny. The lightbulb next to the layer was not changing when a layer was turned off or on. Suspecting something wasn't right I saved my work, restarted the program and tried to get back to work. However now the dxf won't load.

On the screen it says "Press Enter to Continue" and at the bottom it says "Error S32 Undefined". When you hit enter it closes the file, not that it has really opened the file, and sits ready for the next command.

It will open other files without a problem, both DXFs and DWGs.

This is a rush project and any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Info:
Operating System: Windows 7 Professional
AutoCAD version: 2012

Convert dxf into dwg if it can be opened and work under dwg. There may also be some LISP commands which would mess up whatever commands that you are using.

Try the "recover" option in the file menu.

The conversion option will only select dwg files. It appears to convert one version of a dwg to another.

The recover option gives me the same error. Its exact phrasing is as follows:

Error: Block "*S32" was not defined
Invalid or incomplete DXF input -- drawing discarded.

In a new drawing, create a block called *S32
Use the command DXFIN to load your dxf file
See what happens

I've heard opening a corrupted file using Cadopia or similar clone is often more successful than autocad as it is more forgiving with file protocols. You could download an evaluation version and give it a try.

CarlB's idea is good to try. We do DraftSight (freeware from Dassault)

Best to you,

The dxf file is a simple ASCII text file. Open it in Notepad and search for *32. Delete those sections. Try again.

Modifying the notepad version of the file was the trick. Thanks so very much!!
