Does anyone have any guidance on evaluating block shear (tear-out) for a tension-loaded deep channel (C-section) only connected at its web, with a series of elongated ring welds? Can I assume the same fracture paths as with a bolted joint or is that too conservative?

Block shear is a check for bolted connections, not welded connections. For welded connections you will have failure of the weld or failure of the base metal.

Using the same fracture path as you would for bolts sounds like the way to go to me. Obviously, there'd be no need to consider a net section check.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
