Interested in opinions of blocking out around columns vs. not with respect to concrete filled metal composite deck.

You don't block out around columns, but you need to provide support for the deck and prevent spillage of concrete.

You may need to clarify your situation a bit more. I've had to block out around discontinuous columns terminating at girders at composite deck levels in the past. It was necessary in order for the column to be plumbed. I think that you'd probably want to look at it on a case by case basis but so far, I've been able to justify making it work without much fuss.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
