I have a blog going and it has really started turning the corner and I am getting a lot of attention from a surprising number of people and the right people. The thing is kind of turning into an advertising machine that I sort of hoped it would a year ago. It kind of took a lot of grinding to get to that point and during the build up I questioned if it was really worthwhile but just kept on doing it because I kind of like doing it. Now, I got a company that wants to pay me some to create blog post for them to get more attention in an industry that is blowing up. I kind of wanted to get my engineering rate but I talked with a writer last night and he said to keep the rights to everything in incase later I want to right a book or incorporate the work into something else. My wife kind of was leary of it due to it sidetracking some the path to get engineering work. I kind of would like the money but am worried about that some but also hope that me staying around them will land me some work.

Has anyone else done basically marketing work for another company and how much were you compensated for you time? The writer I talked to last night was getting $0.10 a word for freelance writing and I am getting a lot more than that but it is technical so it takes more time and effort.

I haven't done that myself but here's something to consider. If you open your own business and write your own articles, or do it for your own company, it can open new doors. The advertising is a huge value add for your own business. It's even good for the company you work for, as long as you're getting compensated fairly for the additional effort; plus, it might open up doors for promotions and increased reputation. I'm considering starting a video blog for my own company, which I run. My objective is a bit different; it's not for advertising dollars, but rather to gain client confidence. It's not something that's easily quantified, but has immense value.

I'd post your question in reddit, where you can get a lot more exposure from people who do this for a living. Find a subreddit about copywriting or freelance writing.
