BMS and Fire Alarm & ahu shutdown

We are installing bms panels (these are local DDC panels) to control our air handling units. The vfds and/or starters controlling the AHUs are located remote from the BMS panels.

Fire alarm shut down of the units will be activation of the respective duct smoke detectors. We are installing fire alarm control modules within 3'-0" of the BMS panels. The fire alarm systems, upon activation of the duct smoke detectors, would tell the bms panel to shut down the ac units through the vfd/starters.

Question 1 - does the fire alarm control module need to be located at the vfd/starter or can we locate it at the bms panel (DDC panel?

Question 2 -performing the shutdown through the bms panel, does the bms panel require a UUKL or UL 864 listing?

References to code chapter & verse would be helpful.

thanks.

The FACP must be electrically first shutdown of the HVAC. It is not permitted for the BMS to shutdown HVAC on duct detector activation based on NFPA 72.

NightME

do you have a section reference and edition?

If there is no facp than the duct shuts down the hvac.

Isn't the duct detector monitored by the facp??

We require the duct detector to be powered by the facp and reset from the facp, but not being a fa person do not think the facp actualy shuts down the hvac.

Now in some cases I do believe that the facp can send a signal to a module to shut down an hvac unit.

Off topic some, but remote test locations for the duct detectors is a good idea for T & I

After doing a bit more digging, it looks like the BMS cab shutdown the ac unit so long as the bms is ul 864 listed. NFPA 72 has a section for integrating other systems with the fire alarm system.
