What are the requirements for boiler protection particularly with respect to
(1)Boiler level control and
(2)Boiler pressure control
(3)redundancy systems

Recommended for you

Your first option is to check with your local Jurisdiction and review their requirements for boilers. The Jurisdiction should be the location where the boiler is installed.

If you have no Jurisdiction, my recommendation is to follow the recommendations in Appendix I of the 2004 Edition of the National Board Inspection Code. Appendix I deals with Installation requirements for boilers and pressure retaining items - it is a Nonmandatory appendix but many Jurisdictions draw on these recommendations.

Due to the nature of this type of component, and the extreme danger posed by an explosion, ASME and other boilers are purchased, certified and maintained as complete systems.

Redundant safety devices are supplied as a complete package....not evaluated, designed and added on as would be the case for a new distillation column in a refinery.

Are you trying to fix-up/rehabilitate some old boiler purchased from a boneyard somewhere ???..??..!!!

Yes we are busy looking at the refurbishment/upgrade of some boilers which have "hard-wired" elctrical/physical protection systems on them. On receipt of some tenderers we were surprised that some companies ignored this in favour of ordinary dp transmitters (and only one per boiler for that matter)and the so called redundancy done in the control software.
Our proposal was for two level "switches" per boiler similar to the "Hydrostep" to be hardwired to minmise trip and safety risks. I just wanted to make sure that wasn't a new trend or something on the market that I was not aware of.

Are your questions directed at process(steam or hot water) or heating boilers(steam or hot water)? Also are your questions directed to FT, WT, CI or flow-thru generators?

The boilers are high pressure "Lentjies" German types used to drive our 33 MW Turbines at the Morupule Power Station.
 
I dont know anything about the construction of these German type boilers. I think that they are once flow thru steam generator and if I am correct then you would only need flow sensors to stop firing in case of flow interruption. For such boilers there are no steam drums to monitor water level.
Other obvious requirements would be safety valves, automatic feed water regulating system, pressure and temp guages,high pressure and high temp cutoffs, low temp superheat alarm if provided with superheaters. I suspect these units are packaged system therefore these controls would be made available. Most important is to check with your boiler insurance company and local legal jurisdiction as they may have additional requirements.
 
please look at the minimum protection as the Insurers, UL standards, for any boiler regardless of size.
ASME Sec I, ASME CSD-1 (there you go), you can not go wrong with that.
