Boiler Stack + Mass Tuned Damper 2

fellow engr's,

anyone familiar with using mass tuned dampers in lieu of spiral steel strakes for boiler stack in high wind & siesmic activity area?

boiler stack is to be insulated and indoors, except for upper portion of stack. spiral steel strakes may be counter productive (i.e. heat loss).

understand that high-rise bldgs utilize them, but any use/references for boiler stacks.

There are a number of good websites that you could find with Google. I worked on a project with two-300+ ft stacks w/ tuned mass dampeners and found excellent info on the web.

Hi pmover,

we've manufactured a stack with a mass-tuned damper. The damper seems to work very well (no complaints from site yet).The biggest problem we had was wind induced vibration.The wind load calcs, etc were carried out by the mass-tuned damper supplier.Ours was supplied by Warren in the USA.We found that using the damper reduced the need to increase lower shell strake thicknesses to offset the vibration problem.

thanks for the replies. i've found a few websites that provided helpful information (warren is one). interesting concept though and we will be closely investigating the matter.

this particular location is in an artic location; hence, i doubt that a liquid mass tune damper system will be pursued. i suspect that all connections will be made from sst and the weight(s) protected from the environment (corrosion). there is the need to avoid the build-up of ice/snow on the system as well.

Other points are tuned mass dampers are a more reliable alternative than strakes, which are largely designed based on experience and with strakes, you need to design for greater wind induced moment on the foundation due to the greater wind load. Tuned mass dampers can be entirely mechanical.
