Boiler steel stack design

I am involved in the design of a steel stack that is 50' tall and 30" diameter. This is the very first time that I am working on this, and my only scope is to determine thickness. I've been reviewing chapter 4 of ASME STS 1, chapter 4 for it. Do I also need to use chapter 5? Any other good resources or references that will help? Thanks in advance.

Please provide more info such as:
Is it in US? What State? What industry exactly is for?
Only 30" dia.? Any opening or platforms required?
 
It is in North Dakota. No other openings or platforms reqd.
 
I have always considered steel boiler stacks to be items best designed by a specialty vendor.

The ASME Standard defines all important loading conditions, including wind and seismic.

As I recall, stack cost and wall thickness were controlled by 1) wind loadings and 2) stiffener spacing 3) vortex shedding (or vibration dampening devices) used at the top.

The final best economic choice for a boiler stack may be a multiple shell design with layers of insulation and refractory


If your stack is used for a new combustion boiler, you will most certainly need breeching, access ladders and a small platform for emissions sampling.
