A friend of mine is building a boiler for a model steam engine and is having trouble sourcing the appropriate tubing.

I am pretty sure this is a question that gets asked regularly. A quick search of the previous posts does not seem to give an answer however.

He has bought a piece of seamless tube which has certification and at face value would seem okay but the local certifying body is having trouble (don't want to , or don't know how to ) working out whether it is equivalent or not.

One attachment is the "certificate" that came with the tube . To me it looks like its EN 10305-1. The other attachment is the standards required and there are a few ASTM A106, ASTM A53, BS3601, BS3059 Part 2.
I would suggest that these standards are not directly compatible

No, neither of those images is the MTR for the tubing.

I would use ASTM/ASME material specifications for building the model steam boiler if located in the US. Equivalent materials means nothing to boiler and pressure vessel fabricators unless the specific material is listed in an approved material specification listed in ASME B&PV Code.

Thanks metengr and Edstainless for your responses.

My friend is not in the USA but some distance away in Australia and he is building from a UK design and i think this is where the problems start because of some of the castings he is importing for the project. I have not seen any of this but this is what he has explained to me as the problem.

The castings require a 6” OD x 5 Gauge, or .212” Wall Thickness seamless tube but the ASTM standards listed above only cover a 168.9mm seamless tube.
Hence the search for an equivalent standard. As i understand it the tube he has purchased complies with the EN 10305-1 standard but the the Model Boiler Code references the ASTM standard.

Ultimately the question is whether or not the piece of tube which meets the EN 10305-1 standard also meets the other standards that i listed above.

The Australian Boiler Code is an excellent reference for this and provides material specifications to select. Regarding use of another un-referenced material specifications, this depends on the allowances in the Australian Boiler Code.

Thanks for your help.
