Hi,
I'm new to working with B31.9 - Building Service Piping, so I'm not familiar with standard building service piping practices.
In looking at bolt material selection, the only bolting material I see given in Appendix I is A307 Gr. B.
This leads me to believe the majority of building service piping uses this bolting material, which makes sense given the low pressure and low temperature scope of the Code. Is this a correct assumption?
However, section 908.4-Bolting states that "Bolts, nuts, and washers shall conform to applicable standards listed in Table 926.1"
926.1 has no bolting material standards in it, so am I to assume 908.4 is more referencing the dimensional standards in 926.1 (B18.2.1)? Also, table 926.1 does have flange standards, which do list bolting.
So am I to assume Gr. B is the go to material, or can one select bolting material that is called out in one of the many standards listed in 926.1(like in B16.5) and still meet B31.9.
I am aware that one can refer to B31.1 for a broader list of materials and this more or less solves the problem. However I was hoping to get some clarification on selection with specific regard to 908.4, 926.1 and the grade B listed in Appendix I.
Any help appreciated.
