BOM - Part Number defined in TWO places???

Can someone clarify the differences and uses of defining customer/user part numbers? In a part file you can click on Configuration Manager and right click on Default, pick Properties and at the bottom click User Specified Name for "Part number displayed when used in a bill of material" and enter text.

You can ALSO go to File, Properties and Custom and there is a selection to enter text for PartNo. Where is this text for PartNo used as it appears that the selection under Configuration Manager over-rides this every time in the BOM (even though what is entered here for Description comes in to the BOM).

Any suggestions?

Ya,I met the same question.
I trid two way to create the PartNo.
It seems the way by the configuration Manager is better than by the file ,properties,custom.
Because file,propertis and custom cant success to come in BOM everytime!
What's the difference?
