Is there a way to get a BOM from an assembly without creating a drawing and adding it there?

You can get the associated iles under menu picks "File --> Find references...". This won't give you full BOM info, but at least it will tell you what files are used.

This will give me a list of everything that is used (indented BOM). It will include sub-assemblies and their parts. What I am wanting is just the current assembly.

Open the assembly in SolidWorks Explorer. Select the Show References button. The list on the right can be export to Excel.
