I'm looking for a good reference book on different material properties (yield, tensile, etc...) as well as typical applications.

Can anyone recommend a book?

The Clark & Varney metallurgy text is excellent if you are looking for general information about materials and heat treatment. It is an engineering text but it is not difficult to read.

I get a lot of basic info from suppliers catalogs such as McMaster or MSC they cover any material you can buy from them and don't generaly cost you anything.

Handbook of Materials for Product Design (3RD) (2001) is available for the extremely low price of $7.75 + s/h.
Only ~1000 pages, so rather brief on processes. But, lots of cheap "Manufacturing Processes" textbooks are available. And, auto engineers presumably already have Machinery's Handbook.

For metals, I recommend Physical Metallurgy Handbook (2003) and Smithells Metals Reference Book (1992 or newer)
I heartily concur with carnage1's recommendation of It has a good search engine, so you can browse by material, application or specification. Nice to find what is available, do-able, what specs. apply, etc. Do a trial search for 'ASTM screws,' then click on Hex Head & Cap Screws to see some of the available info.
