I am a mechanical engineer in the power distribution
industry designing switchboards and switchgear. I would
like to learn the electrical design aspects, and wonder
if anyone can direct me toward books or other materials
that would help me learn the wiring design...preferably
with an emphasis on practicality as opposed to the theoretical.

Thanks

Component design of switchboards and switchgear is a very proprietary business. I doubt if any reference books are going to provide a lot of details on the design process.

However, the Standard Handbook for Electrical Engineers (Fink & Beatty) can provide a good overview of the different types of electrical equipment you may be interested in.

And the IEEE Red Book will provide additional detail of application of this equipment as well as some basic info on applicable standards, which are a big part of the design process for this equipment.

I like… Industrial Power Systems Handbook, Donald L. Beeman (Editor) January 1955 and Switchgear and Control Handbook, Smeaton, Robert W. Smeaton (Editor), William H. Ubert (Editor) January 1998

What is certain is that no amount of books will teach you how to design switchboards and the only way to achieve your goal is to get a job with a switchgear manufacturing company.

What country are you in? Are you interested in design of equipment, of building wiring, or in general electrical theory?

As mentioned above, the Red Book is a good source regardless of my questions above. I'd expand that, though, to inlude the whole IEEE color series.
