Hi everyone,

are there any structural engineers that recommend books that would strengthen my designing ability (strengthen in terms of leaner designs) for timber or steel structures/frames. Books that are in accordance to australian standards are preferable.

Also if theres any articles, youtube channels.... that would keep me up with the latest construction technologies available in australia.

Thank you

It mostly comes from practicing with an engineer that knows his stuff...

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

Gorenc & Tinyou covers steel design to the Australian code in a fairly practical manner. Trahair & Bradford goes deeper into the underlying theory so not the first port of call for me.

The portal frame book that Retrograde pointed you to would be my recommendation too, even before Gorenc & Tinyou. Whilst it's specific to that type of building, the knowledge is transferable. Good explanation of buckling, bracing and connections - the important stuff.

Check out Standards Australia Handbook HB 108 for timber.

Although i fully agree with Mr. DIK with his respond (It mostly comes from practicing with an engineer that knows his stuff.. ),
still i will suggest you some books ;

- Understanding Structural Analysis , (DAVID BROHN )
- Modern structural analysis modelling process and guidance ( Iain Alasdair MacLeod )
- METAL BUILDING SYSTEMS ( ALEXANDER NEWMAN )
- FAILURE CASE STUDIES IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (ASCE)
- Failures in Concrete structures Case Studies ( Robin Whittle )
