Deriving a part from an assembly makes reference to creating a bounding box. I am able to do this but since it is a separate part, it has to be inserted into an assembly at some point. It cannot be inserted into the assembly it is derived from. I was hoping that at a higher level assembly I could specify whether I wanted to see all the detail or the bounding box.

In an example; Assembly X is used to create derived Part A. Assembly Y has Assembly X placed. How do I set it up so that when I am in Assembly Y I can choose between full detail (Assembly X) or bounding box (Part A)?

Create a new 'Representation' in Assembly Y and call it Part A. Within that representation RMB (Right Mouse Button) on each component you don't want to see and unselect 'Visibility.' Once completed, you can double-click on either representation and your assembly will change. (As a side note, turning the visiblity off won't change the BOM. Invisible parts will still be displayed.)

Under the LOD, Inventor can turn visibility off on components that wouldn't be seen (e.g. internal parts.) But if that isn't necessarily what you want to represent, then I would go with the first suggestion.

Thanx BOPman-I am familiar with View resp and LOD. But when I suppress components with LOD, I would like the bounding box to appear in its place.

In AU (autodesk University) 2006 write-up on "The Ins and Outs of Representations in Autodesk Inventor) on page 9 there is a reference and example of the bounding box. I guess this tool isn't meant to 'unload' higher level assemblies by displaying minute detail as a bounding box.

I am told of a feature in Pro-E called 'shrinkwrap' that I thought this might be the same. What I am looking for is an ability to create (within an assembly) a mode where certain parts are displayed only by a box sized to the components maximum X, Y & Z dimensions. The Bounding box fature ends up being a separate file.
