BOX CULVERT THRU CONC. RET WALL JOINTING

Hi All,

I am using a box culvert for the purpose of stormwater detention. One end of the box (4x6-ft) will need to project thru a poured-in-place conc. retaining wall (wall height will be less than 6-ft). The box will have about 2.5-ft of cover material over it and will support a residential roadway.

Is there any need to specify a jointing material between the box and the wall? If so, what type will do think can do the job?

You might take a look at Evazote (

I have seen it spec'd, but haven't used it. I would recommend a joint material just to allow movement between the surfaces and give you a little more control of seepage. Your local DOT should have some good experience for your area and suppliers.

When the box culvert is manufactured, have the supplier cast a waterstop right into the affected area, then place the walls around the waterstopped area. Ensure that all areas of the culvert are clean of laitance were wall concrete will come in contact with the culvert walls. On the u/s face, consider casting a small rabbet. This will allow the placement of a sealant. As the retaining wall shrinks, that joint will open no matter how well the concrete was placed. Place concrete at the lowest possible w/c ratio, and cure, cure, cure.

What kind of soil? How much will it be used? If it's an arid environment I wouldn't worry about it - If it will be cycled frequently or under pressure you might want to, to prevent fines from migrating or water from pushing up to the roadway. Need more details...
