Does anyone know whether a sanitary ferrule to ASME BPE-2002, DT-2 is acceptable for use on a pressure vessel to ASME B&PV code section VIII? Table DT-2 in BPE-2002 gives limited pressure/temperature ratings for the fittings but does not specifically cite section VIII acceptability. Also, ASME section VIII does not reference BPE-2002 fittings as being "standard" fittings acceptable for use as it does for various ASME/ANSI fittings.

Thats a good question.

It seems very difficult to get written evidence of any Code design for clamps and ferrules for food/pharma applications.

However the ASME BPE code states (in para DT-2 and DT-7) the requirements for bursting strengths and test pressure and since most pressure vessels for food/pharma have clamp type nozzles (which must have been approved in the past) I believe they should be acceptable provided you have made the code calculations for nozzle openings.

The main question is the clamps I think. There's some very cheap ones out there, hinged with a small pin. In Denmark we have experienced sometimes that our local inspectors requested heavy duty clamps (or at least double bolted) clamps to be used for all nozzle connections, but its really hard to get documentation that they meet any codes.

I would like to know if you find out more.

Regards
Mogens
